DEXA Bone Densitometry

The Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) test is used to measure your bone density. It can determine whether or not you have osteoporosis or low bone mass, conditions that commonly affect women after menopause and, in some cases, men. It is a fast, safe and painless test that assesses your bone strength and can predict your risk for bone fracture.

Osteoporosis is a disease that is gaining increased attention as more people live longer, and with early detection, a number of treatments are available to maintain or improve bone density. All women over 65 (and men over 65 with low testosterone levels) should be screened for osteoporosis.

Preparation Instructions

  • Please inform us if you have had an MRI or CT exam with contrast within one week of your DEXA appointment
  • Bring insurance card and authorization.
  • Plan to pay required co-pays at the time of service.
  • Bring a picture ID.
  • Please inform us if you think you may be pregnant.

What to Expect

The test will take less than 30 minutes. You will lie on your back throughout your exam.

Unlike a CT or MRI exam, you are not lying within an enclosed space. No injections are required. You will be asked to lie still while the technologist moves the scanner across your body.

The images will be reviewed by a board-certified radiologist and results will be sent to your referring physician.
